The Manin-Drinfeld theorem and the rationality of Rademacher symbols
(2020)arXivFor any noncocompact Fuchsian group Γ, we show that periods of the canonical differential of the third kind associated to residue divisors of cusps are expressed in terms of Rademacher symbols for Γ - generalizations of periods appearing in the classical theory of modular forms. This result provides a relation between Rademacher symbols and the famous theorem of Manin and Drinfeld. On this basis, we present a straightforward group-theoretic ...Working Paper -
Resolving brain organoid heterogeneity by mapping single cell genomic data to a spatial reference
(2020)bioRxivSelf-organizing tissues resembling brain regions grown in vitro from human stem cells (so-called organoids or spheroids) offer exciting possibilities to study human brain development, disease, and evolution. Brain organoids or spheroids are complex and can contain cells at various stages of differentiation from different brain structures. Single-cell genomic methods provide powerful approaches to explore cell composition, differentiation ...Working Paper -
ARNOLD HARTLEY GIBSON: Hydraulics professor and textbook author
(2022)The United Kingdom was the leading nation in the 19th century, then the British Empire. Despite this fact, hydraulic engineering was not a main concern. Scientists rather worked in maritime hydraulics and naval architecture. In all the above three topics, textbooks were not really available, because both engineers and scientists rather published their works in scientific journals. Gibson, an indirect successor of Osborne Reynolds at the ...Working Paper -
Reviews and syntheses: The promise of big soil data, moving current practices towards future potential
(2021)Biogeosciences DiscussionsIn the age of big data, soil data are more available than ever, but -outside of a few large soil survey resources- remain largely unusable for informing soil management and understanding Earth system processes outside of the original study. Data science has promised a fully reusable research pipeline where data from past studies are used to contextualize new findings and reanalyzed for global relevance. Yet synthesis projects encounter ...Working Paper -
Brief communication: Do 1.0 °C, 1.5 °C or 2.0 °C matter for the future evolution of Alpine glaciers?
(2021)The Cryosphere DiscussionsWith the Paris Agreement, the urgency of limiting ongoing anthropogenic climate change has been recognized. More recent discussions have focused on the difference of limiting the increase in global average temperatures below 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0 °C compared to pre-industrial levels. Here, we assess the impacts that such different scenarios would have on both the future evolution of glaciers in the European Alps and the water resources they ...Working Paper -
Digital contact-tracing during the Covid-19 pandemic: an analysis of newspaper coverage in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland
(2020)medRxivGovernments around the globe have started to develop and deploy digital contact tracing apps to gain control over the spread of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19). The appropriateness and usefulness of these technologies as a containment measure have since sparked political and academic discussions globally. The present paper contributes to this debate through an exploration of how the national daily newspapers in Germany, Austria, and ...Working Paper -
A Canonical Transform for Strengthening the Local Lp-Type Universal Approximation Property
(2021)arXivMost Lp-type universal approximation theorems guarantee that a given machine learning model class ℱ⊆C(ℝd,ℝD) is dense in Lpμ(ℝd,ℝD) for any suitable finite Borel measure μ on ℝd. Unfortunately, this means that the model's approximation quality can rapidly degenerate outside some compact subset of ℝd, as any such measure is largely concentrated on some bounded subset of ℝd. This paper proposes a generic solution to this approximation ...Working Paper -
[Re] Ensuring Connectivity via Data Plane Mechanisms
(2021)ReScienceThe connectivity is of paramount importance to a network, whose basic function is to route packets between end points. Junda Liu et al. proposed Data‐Driven Connectivity (DDC) to ensure routing connectivity via data plane mechanisms, which allows networks to provide a much higher degree of availability, while still providing flexible routing control [1]. Nowadays, against the backdrop of the development of P4, Programming Protocol‐independent ...Working Paper -
Chance-constrained OPF: A Distributed Method with Confidentiality Preservation
(2022)Given the increased percentage of wind power in power systems, chance-constrained optimal power flow (CC-OPF) calculation, as a means to take wind power uncertainty into account with a guaranteed security level, is being promoted. Compared to the local CC-OPF within a regional grid, the global CC-OPF of a multi-regional interconnected grid is able to coordinate across different regions and therefore improve the economic efficiency when ...Working Paper -
Control-aware Probabilistic Load Flow for Transmission Systems: An Analytical Method
(2022)Probabilistic load flow (PLF) calculation, as a fundamental tool to analyze transmission system behavior, has been studied for decades. Despite a variety of available methods, existing PLF approaches rarely take system control into account. However, system control, as an automatic buffer between the fluctuations in random variables and the variations in system states, has a significant impact on the final PLF result. To consider control ...Working Paper
