Equitable and effective climate policy: Integrating less developed countries into a global climate agreement
(2015)Economics Working Paper SeriesThe paper derives general rules for equitable burden sharing in international climate policy. The focus is on a new social climate contract between developed and less developed countries (LDCs) which preserves competitiveness of the former and the ”right to development” of the latter. We formally derive conditions under which an LDC keeps the ”right to development” but voluntarily agrees to participate in stringent international climate ...Working Paper -

Dirty history versus clean expectations: Can energy policies provide momentum for growth?
(2016)Economics Working Paper SeriesWe study the impact of economic policy on the importance of history and expectations for the macroeconomic performance of an economy. In our model the energy mix is based on the conversion of heterogeneous energy sources. Markups over marginal costs are endogenous so that the marginal revenue product of capital becomes non-monotonic in capital. We derive multiple steady states and identify regions in which initial conditions are insufficient ...Working Paper -
Preservation of agricultural soils with endogenous stochastic degradation
(2016)Economics Working Paper SeriesSoils are often subject to environmental shocks which are caused by negative externalities linked to overexploitation. We present a stochastic model of a dynamic agricultural economy where natural disasters are sizeable, multiple, and random. Expansion of agricultural activities raises effective soil units (an index of quality and quantity) but contributes to an aggregate loss of soil-protective ecosystem services, which increases the ...Working Paper -
Is the environment compatible with growth? Adopting an integrated framework
(2016)Economics Working Paper SeriesThe paper develops an integrated baseline model to assess the trade-offs between the natural environment and economic growth. Consumption growth is considered under welfare and sustainability aspects. The framework features capital accumulation and the sectoral structure of the economy as key elements to cope with resource scarcity and pollution. Model extensions varying the number of sectors and inputs, changing central functional forms, ...Working Paper -
Optimal carbon policies in a dynamic heterogenous world
(2018)Economics Working Paper SeriesWe derive the optimal contributions to global climate policy when countries differ with respect to income level and pollution intensity. Countries' growth rates are determined endogenously, and abatement efficiency is improved by technical progress. We show that country heterogeneity has a crucial impact on optimal policy contributions: more developed countries have to make a larger effort while less developed countries are allowed to ...Working Paper -
Economic effects of a nuclear-phase out policy: A CGE analysis
(2012)Economics Working Paper SeriesThe paper investigates the long-run consequences of a phase-out of nuclear energy for the Swiss economy. We apply the CITE model, a CGE model with fully endogenous growth, and complement it with a bottom-up model. We find that the nuclear phase-out can be achieved at relatively low costs, even when the expansion capacities of other technologies are limited. Consumer welfare decreases by 0.4% at the maximum compared to business as usual. ...Working Paper
