Borgs are giant extrachromosomal elements with the potential to augment methane oxidation
(2021)bioRxivAnaerobic methane oxidation exerts a key control on greenhouse gas emissions 1, yet factors that modulate the activity of microorganisms performing this function remain little explored. In studying groundwater, sediments, and wetland soil where methane production and oxidation occur, we discovered extraordinarily large, diverse DNA sequences that primarily encode hypothetical proteins. Four curated, complete genomes are linear, up to ~1 ...Working Paper -
The effect of dynamic lockdowns on public transport demand in times of COVID-19
(2021)SSRNGovernments around the globe have taken different measures to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. The city of Santiago, Chile, followed a dynamic lockdown strategy in which its municipalities were temporarily restricted depending on the degree of advance of the pandemic. We use this variation over time to study the effect of lockdowns on public transport demand, by analysing a 2019-2020 database of smartcard data of trips. These data allow us ...Working Paper -
A FGF2-mediated incoherent feedforward loop induces Erk inhibition and promotes nave pluripotency
(2020)bioRxivNaïve pluripotency is a transient state during mammalian development that can be recapitulated indefinitely in vitro by inhibition of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK/Erk) signalling and activation of STAT and Wnt pathways. How Erk is inhibited in vivo to promote naïve pluripotency remains largely unknown. By combining live cell imaging and quantitative proteomics we found that FGF2, a known Erk activator and pro-differentiation ...Working Paper -
On optimal autocorrelation inequalities on the real line
(2020)arXivWe study autocorrelation inequalities, in the spirit of Barnard and Steinerberger's work. In particular, we obtain improvements on the sharp constants in some of the inequalities previously considered by these authors, and also prove existence of extremizers to these inequalities in certain specific settings. Our methods consist of relating the inequalities in question to other classical sharp inequalities in Fourier analysis, such as the ...Working Paper -

Maximal function estimates and local well-posedness for the generalized Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation
(2020)arXivWe prove a high-dimensional version of the Strichartz estimates for the unitary group associated to the free Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation. As a by--product, we deduce maximal estimates which allow us to prove local well-posedness for the generalized Zakharov--Kuznetsov equation in the whole subcritical case whenever d≥4,k≥4, complementing the recent results of Kinoshita and Herr-Kinoshita. Finally, we use some of those maximal estimates ...Working Paper -
On the suitability of generalized regression neural networks for GNSS position time series prediction for geodetic applications in geodesy and geophysics
(2020)arXivIn this paper, the generalized regression neural network is used to predict the GNSS position time series. Using the IGS 24-hour final solution data for Bad Hamburg permanent GNSS station in Germany, it is shown that the larger the training of the network, the higher the accuracy is, regardless of the time span of the time series. In order to analyze the performance of the neural network in various conditions, 14 permanent stations are ...Working Paper -
Selectively Controlled Magnetic Microrobots with Opposing Helices
(2020)arXivMagnetic microrobots that swim through liquid media are of interest for minimally invasive medical procedures, bioengineering, and manufacturing. Many of the envisaged applications, such as micromanipulation and targeted cargo delivery, necessitate the use and adequate control of multiple microrobots, which will increase the velocity, robustness, and efficacy of a procedure. While various methods involving heterogeneous geometries, magnetic ...Working Paper
