Low-power network design: work hard, play hard
(2019)Competing in a well-known competition in a field that you have no experience in can be hard for sure. In this semester thesis, we describe how we managed to design a low-power wireless protocol for a sensor network in less than 3 months of part-time work. Baloo is a novel protocol design framework, which offers an abstraction layer from the underlying hardware and enables fast protocol prototyping. Using Baloo, our goal was to create a ...Student Paper -
Is low-power wireless networking a reproducible science?
(2019)Recently, a noticeable number of attempts to reproduce experimental results across many different scientific fields were unsuccessful. In the field of low- power wireless networking, the dynamic behavior of the environment causes an inherited variability in the performance of wireless networking protocols, placing under consideration their reproducibility. In this semester project, a methodology for evaluating the performance of low- power ...Student Paper -
Long range order for random field Ising model
(2024)We study existence of long range order in the random field Ising model. We define the classical Ising model and use the so-called Griffiths--Peierls argument to prove existence of long range order for low temperatures, in dimension two and above. Then, we introduce the random field Ising model. We proceed as in J. Ding and Z. Zhuang recent work in \cite{dingzhuang} to extend Peierls argument and show that long range order also exists in ...Student Paper -
Artificial intelligence and climate change
(2023)Adverse effects of climate change disproportionally impact vulnerable groups that historically have contributed the least to global warming (IPCC, 2023). Whereas artificial intelligence (AI) is often framed as “clean tech” in public debate (Nordgren, 2023), it has a dual role in relation to climate change. In this essay, I analyse ethical issues around AI in relation to climate change across dimensions of equity and power. I argue that ...Student Paper -
Learning how to see development faithfully from another’s point of view
(2024)How might we faithfully study power relationships and how they construct the development of technology in the (post)colonial world? In this essay, I first discuss visions of the development episteme, then how these visions are operationalized through international organizations and development aid, and finally suggest an analytical approach that may help us scrutinize and decompose hegemonic narratives that are used to justify these visions ...Student Paper -
