Reconstruction and identification of τ lepton decays to hadrons and ντ at CMS
(2016)Journal of InstrumentationThis paper describes the algorithms used by the CMS experiment to reconstruct and identify τ → hadrons + ντ decays during Run 1 of the LHC. The performance of the algorithms is studied in proton-proton collisions recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1. The algorithms achieve an identification efficiency of 50–60%, with misidentification rates for quark and gluon jets, electrons, ...Journal Article -
Measurement of the differential cross sections for top quark pair production as a function of kinematic event variables in pp collisions at √s=7 and 8 TeV
(2016)Physical Review DMeasurements are reported of the normalized differential cross sections for top quark pair production with respect to four kinematic event variables: the missing transverse energy; the scalar sum of the jet transverse momentum (pT); the scalar sum of the pT of all objects in the event; and the pT of leptonically decaying W bosons from top quark decays. The data sample, collected using the CMS detector at the LHC, consists of 5.0 fb−1 of ...Journal Article -
Search for vector-like charge 2/3T quarks in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV
(2016)Physical Review DA search for fermionic top quark partners T of charge 2/3 is presented. The search is carried out in proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1 collected at a center-of-mass energy of √s=8 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The T quarks are assumed to be produced strongly in pairs and can decay into tH, tZ, and bW. The search is performed in five exclusive channels: a single-lepton channel, a ...Journal Article -
Search for resonant tt¯ production in proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV
(2016)Physical Review DA search is performed for the production of heavy resonances decaying into top-antitop quark pairs in proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV. Data used for the analyses were collected with the CMS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1. The search is performed using events with three different final states, defined by the number of leptons (electrons and muons) from the t¯t→WbWb decay. The analyses are optimized ...Journal Article -
Measurement of Long-Range Near-Side Two-Particle Angular Correlations in pp Collisions at √s = 13 TeV
(2016)Physical Review LettersResults on two-particle angular correlations for charged particles produced in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are presented. The data were taken with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 270 nb−1. The correlations are studied over a broad range of pseudorapidity (|η|<2.4) and over the full azimuth (ϕ) as a function of charged particle multiplicity and transverse momentum (pT). ...Journal Article -
Search for Resonant Production of High-Mass Photon Pairs in Proton-Proton Collisions at √s=8 and 13 TeV
(2016)Physical Review LettersA search for the resonant production of high-mass photon pairs is presented. The analysis is based on samples of proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at center-of-mass energies of 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 19.7 and 3.3 fb−1, respectively. The interpretation of the search results focuses on spin-0 and spin-2 resonances with masses between 0.5 and 4 TeV and with widths, relative to ...Journal Article -
Sub-Femto-g Free Fall for Space-Based Gravitational Wave Observatories: LISA Pathfinder Results
(2016)Physical Review LettersWe report the first results of the LISA Pathfinder in-flight experiment. The results demonstrate that two free-falling reference test masses, such as those needed for a space-based gravitational wave observatory like LISA, can be put in free fall with a relative acceleration noise with a square root of the power spectral density of 5.2 ± 0.1 fm s(−2)/√Hz, or (0.54 ± 0.01) × 10(−15) g/√Hz, with g the standard gravity, for frequencies between ...Journal Article -
Measurement of the top quark mass using proton-proton data at √s = 7 and 8 TeV
(2016)Physical Review DA new set of measurements of the top quark mass are presented, based on the proton-proton data recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC at √s = 8 TeV corresponding to a luminosity of 19.7fb−1. The top quark mass is measured using the lepton + jets, all-jets and dilepton decay channels, giving values of 172.35 ± 0.16(stat) ± 0.48(syst) GeV, 172.32 ± 0.25(stat) ± 0.59(syst) GeV, and 172.82 ± 0.19(stat) ± 1.22(syst) GeV, respectively. When ...Journal Article -
Search for dark matter and unparticles produced in association with a Z boson in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV
(2016)Physical Review DA search for evidence of particle dark matter (DM) and unparticle production at the LHC has been performed using events containing two charged leptons, consistent with the decay of a Z boson, and large missing transverse momentum. This study is based on data collected with the CMS detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1 of pp collisions at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. No significant excess of events ...Journal Article -
Measurement of the integrated and differential t¯t production cross sections for high-pT top quarks in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV
(2016)Physical Review DThe cross section for pair production of top quarks (t¯t) with high transverse momenta is measured in pp collisions, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC with √s=8 TeV in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1. The measurement is performed using lepton+jets events, where one top quark decays semileptonically, while the second top quark decays to a hadronic final state. The hadronic decay is reconstructed as a ...Journal Article
