Design of an isokinetic knee dynamometer for evaluation of functional electrical stimulation strategies
(2019)Medical Engineering & PhysicsBackground The limitations of functional electrical stimulation (FES) cycling directly affect the health benefits acquired from this technology and prevents its’ full potential to be realised. Experiments should be done on a test bed which can isolate and focus only on one muscle group, namely the quadriceps. The aim of this work was to design and develop an isokinetic robotic leg extension/flexion dynamometer which can mimic knee joint ...Journal Article -
Compression Field Analysis of Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Based on Cracked Membrane Model
(2019)ACI Structural JournalCompression field approaches are well-established methods used to analyze the load-deformation behavior of reinforced concrete elements subjected to in-plane shear and normal forces. In this paper, the simplified Cracked Membrane Model, considering rotating, stress-free cracks, is extended to include the effect of fiber reinforcement. The key advantage of the proposed compression field approach is that it yields the most important factors ...Journal Article -
Scaling up capacity of stand-alone adsorption refrigeration tubes
(2019)Results in EngineeringOn the basis of a validated model, a parametric study is conducted to understand the effects of operating parameters on the coefficient of performance (COP) and specific cooling power (SCP) of a stand-alone adsorption refrigeration tube (ART). It is revealed that the SCP obtained based on the model with the transient pressure process (TPP) boundary condition is approximately 20% higher than that obtained without the TPP. A scaling up ...Journal Article -
Origin and evolution of ferroelectricity in the layered rare-earth-titanate, R2Ti2O7, Carpy-Galy phases
(2019)PolyhedronWe report a systematic first-principles study based on density functional theory (DFT) of the structural and ferroelectric properties of the R2Ti2O7 perovskite-related oxides with R = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd. We show that, in all cases, the ferroelectric distortion to the ground-state polar P21structure from its parent cen-trosymmetric P21/m phase is driven by a single polar soft mode consisting of rotations and tilts of theTiO6 octahedra ...Journal Article -
Generalized network dismantling
(2019)Proceedings of the National Academy of SciencesThe proper functioning of many sociotechnical systems depends on their level of connectivity. By removing or deactivating a specific set of nodes, a network structure can be dismantled into isolated subcomponents, thereby disrupting the malfunctioning of a system or containing the spread of misinformation or an epidemic. We propose a generalized network-dismantling framework, which can take realistic removal costs into account such as the ...Journal Article -
Risk Attitudes and Risk Dominance in the Long Run
(2019)Games and Economic BehaviorThis paper investigates the role that risk attitudes play in the evolution of conventions in the long run. Risk aversion is shown to be associated with the evolution of maximin conventions, and risk seeking with the evolution of payoff dominant conventions.Journal Article -
Absolute Primary Pressure Scale to 120 GPa: Toward a Pressure Benchmark for Earth's Lower Mantle
(2019)Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid EarthSelf‐consistent absolute primary pressure scale available to whole Earth's lower mantle pressure regime was established by the simultaneous measurement of densities and acoustic wave velocities of NaCl‐B2 phase up to ~120 GPa without any use of prior pressure standards. While our pressure scale shows excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions, some of the previous secondary pressure scales constructed based on the prior pressure ...Journal Article -
The Caribbean and Farallon Plates Connected: Constraints From Stratigraphy and Paleomagnetism of the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica
(2019)Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid EarthPlate kinematic reconstructions play an essential role in our understanding of global geodynamics, but become increasingly difficult to constrain back in geological time due to the subduction of oceanic lithosphere. Here, we attempt to kinematically reconstruct the Cretaceous and older plate tectonic history of the Caribbean Plate within the Mesozoic Panthalassa (paleo‐Pacific) Ocean. To this end, we present new paleomagnetic data from ...Journal Article -
Integration of resource recovery into current waste management through (Enhanced) landfill mining
(2019)DetritusEurope has somewhere between 150,000 and 500,000 landfill sites, with an estimat-ed 90% of them being “non-sanitary” landfills, predating the EU Landfill Directive of 1999/31/EC. These older landfills tend to be filled with municipal solid waste and often lack any environmental protection technology. “Doing nothing”, state-of-the-art aftercare or remediating them depends largely on technical, societal and eco-nomic ...Journal Article
