Evaluation of two workflows for whole genome sequencing-based typing of influenza A viruses
(2019)Journal of virological methodsWe compared two sample preparation protocols for whole genome sequencing of influenza A viruses. Each protocol was assessed using cDNA quantity and quality and the resulting mean genome coverage after sequencing. Both protocols produced acceptable result for samples with high viral load, whereas one protocol performed slightly better with limited virus count.Journal Article -
Ethnic networks can foster the economic integration of refugees
(2019)Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of AmericaThere is widespread concern in Europe and other refugee-receiving continents that living in an enclave of coethnics hinders refugees’ economic and social integration. Several European governments have adopted policies to geographically disperse refugees. While many theoretical arguments and descriptive studies analyze the impact of spatially concentrated ethnic networks on immigrant integration, there is limited causal evidence that sheds ...Journal Article -
Exact model for the response of moderately thick laminates to transverse forces
(2019)Composite StructuresUnder the premise of homogeneous force, or curvature-gradient, distribution, a solution for transverse-shear strainsand stresses, warping functions, and through-thickness displacements is derived by satisfying all relations and con-ditions of linear elasticity. Only for calculating the substitute-plate transverse-stiffness matrix the principle of theminimum of the total potential energy is used as a scheme for correctly combining ...Journal Article -
Weakening of the Teleconnection From El Niño–Southern Oscillation to the Arctic Stratosphere Over the Past Few Decades: What Can Be Learned From Subseasonal Forecast Models?
(2019)Journal of Geophysical Research: AtmospheresWhile a connection between the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Northern Hemisphere wintertime stratospheric polar vortex appears robust in observational studies focusing on the period before 1979 and in many modeling studies, this connection is not evident over the past few decades. In this study, the factors that have led to the disappearance of the ENSO‐vortex relationship are assessed by comparing this relationship in ...Journal Article -
Nontarget Screening Reveals Time Trends of Polar Micropollutants in a Riverbank Filtration System
(2019)Environmental Science & TechnologyThe historic emissions of polar micropollutants in a natural drinking water source were investigated by nontarget screening with high-resolution mass spectrometry and open cheminformatics tools. The study area consisted of a riverbank filtration transect fed by the river Lek, a branch of the lower Rhine, and exhibiting up to 60-year travel time. More than 18,000 profiles were detected. Hierarchical clustering revealed that 43% of the 15 ...Journal Article -
Measuring the temporal dynamics of policy mixes – An empirical analysis of renewable energy policy mixes’ balance and design features in nine countries
(2019)Research PolicyComplex societal or environmental problems require fast and substantial socio-technical transitions. For instance, in the case of climate change, these transitions need to take place in the energy, transport and several industry sectors. To induce and accelerate such transitions, numerous policy interventions are required, which interact with each other in policy mixes. While several conceptual studies on policy mixes have been published ...Journal Article -
Stress analysis of corrugated orthotropic laminates under transverse shear loading
(2019)Composite StructuresThis paper presents a study on the stresses caused by transverse shear force on corrugated laminates that complements existing work having addressed stresses caused by bending moment. It recalls recent theory for simulating transverse-force effects, provides fundamental insights on the peculiar effects of corrugation on shear stress distributions, and illuminates the effects of geometric parameters and laminate design on inter- and ...Journal Article -

Characterization of mesoangioblast cell fate and improved promyogenic potential of a satellite cell-like subpopulation upon transplantation in dystrophic murine muscles
(2019)Stem Cell ResearchDuchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a lethal muscle-wasting disease caused by the lack of dystrophin in muscle fibers that is currently without curative treatment. Mesoangioblasts (MABs) are multipotent progenitor cells that can differentiate to a myogenic lineage and that can be used to express Dystrophin upon transplantation into muscles, in autologous gene therapy approaches. However, their fate in the muscle environment remains poorly ...Journal Article
