GPS radio occultation: Results from CHAMP, GRACE and FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC
(2009)Terrestrial, Atmospheric and Oceanic SciencesThe Taiwan/US FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC (FORMOsa SATellite mission - 3/Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate) satellite nstellation was successfully launched on 14 April 2006. It is expected to leverage the use of the GPS (Global Positioning System) radio occultation data for atmospheric and ionospheric research to improve global weather forecasts and aid climate change related studies. FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC, together ...Journal Article -
Punishment Deters Crime Because Humans Are Bounded in Their Strategic Decision-Making
(2009)Journal of Artificial Societies and Social SimulationIs it rational to reduce criminal activities if punishments are increased? While intuition might suggest so, game theory concludes differently. From the game theoretical perspective, inspectors anticipate the effect of increased punishments on criminal behavior and reduce their inspection activities accordingly. This implies that higher punishments reduce inspections and do not affect crime rates. We present two laboratory experiments, ...Journal Article -
Opinion Dynamics: the Effect of the Number of Peers Met at Once
(2008)Journal of Artificial Societies and Social SimulationThe opinion dynamics model introduced by Deffuant and Weisbuch as well as the one by Hegselmann and Krause are rather similar. In both models individuals are assumed to have opinions about an issue, they meet and discuss, and they may adapt their opinions towards the other agents` opinions or may ignore each other if their positions are too different. Both models differ with respect to the number of peers they meet at once. Furthermore ...Journal Article -
How Groups Can Foster Consensus: The Case of Local Cultures
(2009)Journal of Artificial Societies and Social SimulationA local culture denotes a set of rules on business behaviour among firms in a cluster. Similar to social norms or conventions, it is an emergent feature of interaction in an economic network. To model its emergence, we consider a distributed agent population, representing cluster firms. Further, we build on a continuous opinion dynamics model with bounded confidence (ε), which assumes that two agents only interact if differences in their ...Journal Article -
Evolution of a synoptic-scale vortex advecting toward a high mountain
(2003)Tellus A: Dynamic Meteorology and OceanographyA model-based study is undertaken of a synoptic-scale vortex’s encounter with Greenland-scale topography. The ambient setting is a barotropic westerly flow of uniform potential vorticity. This flow is both incident upon and induces an anticyclone over the topography, and it also serves to advect the vortex toward the mountain. In a simulated evolution of the flow the vortex circumnavigates poleward around the mountain but concomitantly ...Journal Article -
A refined Hovmöller diagram
(2006)Tellus A: Dynamic Meteorology and OceanographyA refinement is proposed to the conventional Hovmäoller diagram. The rationale is set out for the refined approach, a description provided of its design, and examples presented to illustrate its value as a diagnostic tool. It is shown that it can depict the dynamical characteristics of synoptic-scale disturbances as they evolve on a meandering tropopause-level waveguide, and in particular it can detect wave-breaking events, cut-off formation ...Journal Article -
The estrogen-responsive B box protein - A novel regulator of keratinocyte differentiation
(2002)Journal of Biological ChemistryKeratinocyte growth factor (KGF) regulates proliferation, differentiation, migration, and survival of different types of epithelial cells, including keratinocytes of the skin. To gain insight into the mechanisms underlying these multiple functions, we searched for KGF- regulated genes in keratinocytes. Using the differential display reverse transcriptase-PCR technology, we identified the gene encoding the estrogen-responsive B box protein ...Journal Article -
Production properties of K*(892)± vector mesons and their spin alignment as measured in the NOMAD experiment
(2006)The European Physical Journal CFirst measurements of K⋆(892)± mesons production properties and their spin alignment in νμ charged current (CC) and neutral current (NC) interactions are presented. The analysis of the full data sample of the NOMAD experiment is performed in different kinematic regions. For K⋆+ and K⋆− mesons produced in νμ CC interactions and decaying into K0π± we have found the following yields per event: (2.6±0.2(stat.)±0.2(syst.))% and (1.6±0.1(stat ...Journal Article -
Search for Higgs bosons decaying to WW in e+e- collisions at LEP
(2007)The European Physical Journal CA search for Higgs bosons produced in association with a fermion pair, and decaying to WW, is performed with the data collected by the ALEPH detector at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 191 to 209 GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 453.2 pb-1. Thirteen exclusive selections are developed according to the different final state topologies. No statistically significant evidence for a Higgs boson decaying into a WW ...Journal Article -
Numerical simulations with two flavours of twisted-mass Wilson quarks and DBW2 gauge action
(2006)The European Physical Journal CDiscretisation errors in two-flavour lattice QCD with Wilson quarks and DBW2 gauge action are investigated by comparing numerical simulation data at two values of the bare gauge coupling. Both non-zero- and zero-twisted-mass values are considered. The results, including also data from simulations using the Wilson plaquette gauge action, are compared to next-to-leading order chiral perturbation theory formulas.Journal Article
