Platon und die bildende Kunst: eine Revision
(2009)Plato JournalPlato’s statements on art have met with countless commentators and almost as many different interpretations. In most cases, comments and hints that are scattered through various dialogues are taken out of context and played off against each other – depending on whether the intention is to portray Plato as a modern art lover or as an ageing political reactionary. In the face of the confusing range of contending opinions, there is an urgent ...Journal Article -
Distinctively variable sequence-based nuclear DNA markers for multilocus phylogeography of the soybean- and rice-infecting fungal pathogen Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 IA
(2009)Genetics and Molecular BiologyA series of multilocus sequence-based nuclear DNA markers was developed to infer the phylogeographical history of the Basidiomycetous fungal pathogen Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 IA infecting rice and soybean worldwide. The strategy was based on sequencing of cloned genomic DNA fragments (previously used as RFLP probes) and subsequent screening of fungal isolates to detect single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Ten primer pairs were designed ...Journal Article -
Modulatory effects of Tabebuia impetiginosa (Lamiales, Bignoniaceae) on doxorubicin-induced somatic mutation and recombination in Drosophila melanogaster
(2009)Genetics and Molecular BiologyThe wing Somatic Mutation and Recombination Test (SMART) in D. melanogaster was used to study genotoxicity of the medicinal plant Tabebuia impetiginosa. Lapachol (naphthoquinone) and β-lapachone (quinone) are the two main chemical constituents of T. impetiginosa. These compounds have several biological properties. They induce apoptosis by generating oxygen-reactive species, thereby inhibiting topoisomerases (I and II) or inducing other ...Journal Article -

Contacts between poultry farms, their spatial dimension and their relevance for avian influenza preparedness
(2009)Geospatial HealthOngoing economic losses by and exposure of humans to highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in poultry flocks across Asia and parts of Africa and Europe motivate also outbreak-free countries such as Switzerland to invest in preparedness planning. Country-specific population data on between-farm contacts are required to anticipate probable patterns of pathogen spread. Information is scarce; in particular on how strongly small, non-commercial ...Journal Article -
Cross pathogenicity of Ceratobasidium spp. from kaki (Diospyros kaki) and tea (Camellia sinensis) and reaction of kaki varieties to the pathogen
The step length-frequency relationship in physically active community-dwelling older women
(2008)European Journal of Applied PhysiologyThis study evaluated the step length–frequency relationship in physically active community-dwelling older women in order to investigate whether the relationship between these two spatio-temporal gait parameters changes with increasing age. Forty older women in four age groups, i.e. 64–69, 70–74, 75–79 and 80–85 year olds, participated in the study. Subjects walked at five different self-selected speeds and while simultaneously performing ...Journal Article -
Protection by Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer against the genotoxicity of doxorubicin in somatic cells of Drosophila melanogaster
(2008)Genetics and Molecular BiologyPanax ginseng is one of the most widely prescribed herbal medicines for the treatment of cancer, diabetes, chronic inflammation, and neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases. Since the use of alternative medicines in combination with conventional therapy may increase the risk of unwanted interactions, we investigated the possible genotoxicity of a water-soluble form of the dry root of P. ginseng (2.5, 5.0 or 10.0 mg/mL) and its ability ...Journal Article -
Antigenotoxic effects of Mandevilla velutina (Gentianales, Apocynaceae) crude extract on cyclophosphamide-induced micronuclei in Swiss mice and urethane-induced somatic mutation and recombination in Drosophila melanogaster
(2008)Genetics and Molecular BiologyA Mandevilla velutina crude extract was investigated using the mouse micronucleus test (MNT) and the Drosophila melanogaster somatic mutation and recombination test (SMART) using standard (ST) and high bioactivation (HB) crosses. The MNT used 10 mg, 20 mg or 40 mg per 100 g of body weight (bw) of extract with and without 0.2 mg per 100 g bw peritoneal cyclophosphamide. There was no genotoxicity in the negative control or extract only ...Journal Article -
Fabrication of semiconductor nanowires for electronic transport measurements
(2006)ChimiaWe report on epitaxial growth of InAs nanowires and the steps necessary to create devices for electrnic transport experiments. Growth conditions were found by the use of metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) resulting in nanowires with designable length and diameter. Electrical properties indicate diffusive electron transport with an elastic mean free path of around hundred nanometers. Coherent quantum mechanical effects and single ...Journal Article
