Nanocellulose aerogels as 3D amyloid templates
(2023)NanoscaleProteins in solution tend to coat solid surfaces upon exposure. Depending on the nature of the surface, the environmental conditions, and the nature of the protein these adsorbed proteins may self-assemble into ordered, fibre-like structures called amyloids. Nanoparticulate surfaces, with their high surface to volume ratio, are particularly favourable to amyloid formation. Most prior research has focussed on either inorganic or organic ...Journal Article -
Controlling primary chain dispersity in network polymers: elucidating the effect of dispersity on degradation†
(2023)Chemical ScienceAlthough dispersity has been demonstrated to be instrumental in determining many polymer properties, current synthetic strategies predominantly focus on tailoring the dispersity of linear polymers. In contrast, controlling the primary chain dispersity in network polymers is much more challenging, in part due to the complex nature of the reactions, which has limited the exploration of properties and applications. Here, a one-step method ...Journal Article -
CVD of MoS₂ single layer flakes using Na₂MoO₄ – impact of oxygen and temperature–time-profile
(2023)NanoscaleTwo-dimensional (2D) materials are of great interest in many fields due to their astonishing properties at an atomic level thickness. Many fundamentally different methods to synthesize 2D materials, such as exfoliation or chemical vapor deposition (CVD), have been reported. Despite great efforts and progress to investigate and improve each synthesis method, mainly to increase the yield and quality of the synthesized 2D materials, most ...Journal Article -
Driving electrochemical reactions at the microscale using CMOS microelectrode arrays
(2023)Lab on a ChipPrecise control of pH values at electrode interfaces enables the systematic investigation of pH-dependent processes by electrochemical means. In this work, we employed high-density complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) microelectrode arrays (MEAs) as miniaturized systems to induce and confine electrochemical reactions in areas corresponding to the pitch of single electrodes (17.5 mu m). First, we present a strategy for generating ...Journal Article -
Competing quantum effects in heavy-atom tunnelling through conical intersections
(2023)Chemical ScienceThermally activated chemical reactions are typically understood in terms of overcoming potential-energy barriers. However, standard rate theories break down in the presence of a conical intersection (CI) because these processes are inherently nonadiabatic, invalidating the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Moreover, CIs give rise to intricate nuclear quantum effects such as tunnelling and the geometric phase, which are neglected by standard ...Journal Article -
High and fast: NMR protein-proton side-chain assignments at 160 kHz and 1.2 GHz
(2023)Chemical ScienceThe NMR spectra of side-chain protons in proteins provide important information, not only about their structure and dynamics, but also about the mechanisms that regulate interactions between macromolecules. However, in the solid-state, these resonances are particularly difficult to resolve, even in relatively small proteins. We show that magic-angle-spinning (MAS) frequencies of 160 kHz, combined with a high magnetic field of 1200 MHz ...Journal Article -
2D foam film coating of antimicrobial lysozyme amyloid fibrils onto cellulose nanopapers
(2023)Nanoscale AdvancesAmyloid fibrils made from inexpensive hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) are bio-based, bio-degradable and bio-compatible colloids with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, making them an attractive alternative to existing small-molecule antibiotics. Their surface activity leads to the formation of 2D foam films within a loop, similar to soap films when blowing bubbles. The stability of the foam was optimized by screening concentration and ...Journal Article -
Energy crisis in Europe enhances the sustainability of green chemicals
(2023)Green ChemistryAmmonia and methanol are essential to modern societies, but their production has been heavily reliant on natural gas, which contributes to supply disruptions and significant CO2 emissions. While low-carbon or green production routes have been extensively researched, their adoption has been hindered by higher costs, making them unsustainable. However, a recent energy crisis in Europe has created a unique opportunity to shift towards greener ...Journal Article -
Thermal Current Interruption Performance of CO2 and CO2/C4F7N mixture
(2023)Plasma Physics and TechnologyThis contribution aims to compare the thermal interruption performance of pure CO2 with a mixture of CO2/C4F7N. Measurements primarily show higher interrupting capability for a mixture with C4F7N. Detailed analysis shows a distinct difference in the failure mechanism which for CO2/C4F7N is thermal failure and for CO2 mostly “hot dielectric” failure. The difference in the failure mechanism is relevant for the test duties with the most ...Journal Article -
Shell viscosity estimation of lipid-coated microbubbles
(2023)Soft MatterUnderstanding the shell rheology of ultrasound contrast agent microbubbles is vital for anticipating their bioeffects in clinical practice. Past studies using sophisticated acoustic and optical techniques have made enormous progress in this direction, enabling the development of shell models that adequately reproduce the nonlinear behaviour of the coated microbubble under acoustic excitation. However, there have also been puzzling ...Journal Article
