Analysis of commute Atlanta instrumented vehicle GPS data: Destination choice behavior and activity spaces

Abstract

The Commute Atlanta Instrumented Vehicle GPS Data is currently the longest running data source available for the comprehensive analysis of individual trip and activity demand. Among other exciting research opportunities for mobility analysis, the longitudinal data have opened the field for testing hypotheses developed to describe human spatial behavior over time. This paper provides an overview of how the unique GPS data can be used in travel behavior analysis. At the same time, the paper provides analytical results of destination choice and activ- ity spaces assessed for a one-year travel period. The investigation focuses on the enumeration of trips and unique locations visited over time which is employed as a straightforward way to reveal spatio-temporal patterns of travel behavior. It offers new insights into the nature of stability, innovation, and variety seeking in locational choice.
