Abstract
This data set captures dynamic spatial and non-spatial aspects of territories of the Holy Roman Empire (HRE) in 16th century Europe. Each line in the data files corresponds to a territory and each column to an attribute. Spatial attributes are the geo-coordinates of the perimeter of the territories which allow us to map the territories on a map, compute neighbourhood relations and surface areas. Non-spatial attributes include the foundation year of the territory or its official denomination (e.g., Lutheran). The data are dynamic because they capture the volatile nature of territories. For example, territories switched from Catholicism to Protestantism, conquered land, or up-or downgraded their type of rule. This data set was manually assembled based on the maps in Schindling & Walter, 1989: Die Territorien des Reichs im Zeitalter der Reformation und Konfessionalisierung: Land und Konfession 1500-1650. Volumes 1-5., and the Wikipedia pages of HRE territories. I also generated a sister data set with an automatic extraction method (doi=10.3929/ethz-b-000472585). Show more
