Abstract
Mass balance measurements on Griesgletscher started in 1961. The number of measurement points was 16 in the first 8 years, thereafter it has been increased up to 78 (13 points/km2) and kept constant until 1984. Since then, the measurements were continued with a selection of 10 measurement points. Until 1984, the average net balance was determined with the traditional method, where contour lines of equal net balances were drawn by hand to calculate a specific value for each area between the contour lines and finally these values were integrated for the entire glacier. For the period 1961-1984, 73 % of the 23 x 78 data set is available. With this important data set, different statistical methods to determine the average net balance were tested to asses their accuracy and to consider a reduction of the number of measurement points. It could be shown that the linear model of Lliboutry gives satisfying results if the accumulation and the ablation areas are treated separately. Show more
