Improving Agricultural Policy Decisions through Replications
(2024)EuroChoicesCurrently, policy decisions are often made based on untested scientific results. Replication studies repeat previously published research and, thus, are an effective way to test the validity and reliability of research studies, as well as to test the potential for generalisations of such studies. Replications can contribute to improved policy decisions and thus more efficient use of resources. To date, very few replications of research ...Other Journal Item -

Rebooting disruptive science: Exploring the challenges and potential solutions
(2023)European Journal of Clinical InvestigationThere has been a decline in the number of disruptive scientific discoveries and breakthroughs. Here, reasons for the decline of disruptive science are explored including declining funding for basic research, increasing risk-aversion among scientists, pressure to publish quickly and increasing administrative workload. Solutions are proposed to reverse the trend and encourage disruptive research especially for young scientists.Other Journal Item -

RecruitNet: A global database of plant recruitment networks
(2023)EcologyPlant recruitment interactions (i.e., what recruits under what) shape the composition, diversity, and structure of plant communities. Despite the huge body of knowledge on the mechanisms underlying recruitment interactions among species, we still know little about the structure of the recruitment networks emerging in ecological communities. Modeling and analyzing the community-level structure of plant recruitment interactions as a complex ...Other Journal Item -
Openness as Organizing Principle: Introduction to the Special Issue
(2023)Organization Studies‘Openness’ has become an organizational leitmotif of our time, spreading across a growing set of organizational domains. However, discussions within these specialized domains (e.g. open data, open government or open innovation) treat openness in isolation and specific to the particularities of those domains. The intention of this Special Issue therefore is to foster cross-domain conversations to exchange insights and build cumulative ...Other Journal Item -
Suppression of both intra- and intercellular RNA silencing by the tombusviral P19 protein requires its small RNA binding property
(2022)New PhytologistA comment on Garnelo Gomez et al. (2021) 'The viral silencing suppressor P19 interacts with the receptorlike kinases BAM1 and BAM2 and suppresses the cell to-cell movement of RNA silencing independently of its ability to bind sRNA'Other Journal Item -
Design publicity of black box algorithms: a support to the epistemic and ethical justifications of medical AI systems
(2022)Journal of Medical EthicsIn their article 'Who is afraid of black box algorithms? On the epistemological and ethical basis of trust in medical AI', Duran and Jongsma discuss the epistemic and ethical challenges raised by black box algorithms in medical practice. The opacity of black box algorithms is an obstacle to the trustworthiness of their outcomes. Moreover, the use of opaque algorithms is not normatively justified in medical practice. The authors introduce ...Other Journal Item -
Partial ring annuloplasty in the management of mitral annular calcification
(2022)Journal of Cardiac SurgeryMitral annular calcification (MAC) complicates the management of mitral valve (MV) disease, regardless of its etiology. Strategies to address MV surgery in MAC include two main options with their own pros and cons; respect and resect strategy. Here, we present a case of minimally-invasive MV repair with partial annuloplasty in the management of noncircumferential MAC with respect to strategy. This technique may be an alternative option ...Other Journal Item
