On the metric, topological and functional structures of urban networks
(2008)Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its ApplicationsAxial Graphs are networks whose nodes are linear axes in urban space, and edges represent intersections of such axes. These graphs are used in urban planning and urban morphology studies. In this text we analyse distance distributions between nodes in axial graphs, and show that these distributions are well approximated by rescaled Poisson distributions. We then demonstrate a correlation between the parameters governing the distance ...Journal Article -

Tail estimates for sums of variables sampled by a random walk
(2008)Combinatorics, Probability & ComputingWe prove tail estimates for variables of the form P i f(Xi), where (Xi)I is a sequence of states drawn from a reversible Markov chain, or, equivalently, from a random walk on an undirected graph. The estimates are in terms of the range of the function f, its variance, and the spectrum of the graph. The purpose of our estimates is to determine the number of chain/walk samples which are required for approximating the expectation of a ...Journal Article -

Post structural readings of a logico-mathematical text
(2008)Perspectives on ScienceThis paper will apply post-structural semiotic theories to study the texts of Gödel's first incompleteness theorem. I will study the texts' own articulations of concepts of ‘meaning’, analyze the mechanisms they use to sustain their senses of validity, and point out how the texts depend (without losing their mathematical rigor) on sustaining some shifts of meaning. I will demonstrate that the texts manifest semiotic effects, which we ...Journal Article -

Volume versus surface nucleation in freezing aerosols
(2008)Physical Review EThe present study puts an end to the ongoing controversy regarding volume versus surface nucleation in freezing aerosols: Our study on nanosized aerosol particles demonstrates that current state of the art measurements of droplet ensembles cannot distinguish between the two mechanisms. The reasons are inherent experimental uncertainties as well as approximations used to analyze the kinetics. The combination of both can lead ...Journal Article -
Phase, shape, and architecture of SF6 and SF6∕CO2 aerosol particles: Infrared spectra and modeling of vibrational excitons
(2008)The Journal of Chemical PhysicsInformation on the phase, shape, and architecture of pure SF6 and mixed SF6 /CO2 aerosol particles is extracted from experimental infrared spectra by comparison with predictions from quantum mechanical exciton calculations. The radius of the particles lies around 50 nm. The following extensions to our previous vibrational exciton model are included: (i) To account for the many degrees of freedom of degenerate vibrational bands of aerosol ...Journal Article -
Comparing the effectiveness of two real-time train rescheduling systems in case of perturbed traffic conditions
(2008)WIT Transactions on the Built Environment ~ Computers in Railways XIRescheduling train traffic in a busy and complex railway area is a challenging task, partly because of the high number of constraints to be taken into account, and partly because of the many variables involved. Currently this task is performed almost exclusively by human traffic operators. Previous attempts to provide an automated decision support system have been limited to identifying and solving train conflicts locally. Recently ...Journal Article
