Tbit/s Single Channel 53 km Free-Space Optical Transmission - Assessing the Feasibility of Optical GEO-Satellite Feeder Links
(2022)OSA Technical Digest ~ European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) 2022A 1 Tbit/s 53km single channel free-space optical (FSO) link is demonstrated. High bandwidth, high order modulation formats and advanced adaptive optics are utilized. We show that the absence of a nonlinear-Shannon limit in combination with adaptive optics enables record data-transmission with low link failures.Conference Paper -
Genetic Algorithm Based Geometry Optimization of Terahertz Plasmonic Modulator Antennas
(2022)2022 23rd International Conference on the Computation of Electromagnetic Fields (COMPUMAG)Plasmonic modulator antennas with high field enhancement values are essential to detect weak fields at high speeds in future communication systems. Consequently, such antennas with high field enhancement values at frequencies reaching up to 500 GHz are rising interest in the research. These antenna systems enable direct mapping of electromagnetic waves onto the optical signals. Thereby, they eliminate the radio frequency (RF) losses that ...Conference Paper -
Generation and transmission of 160-Gbaud QPSK Coherent Signals using a Dual-Drive Plasmonic-Organic Hybrid I/Q modulator on Silicon Photonics
(2022)Technical Digest Series ~ Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) 2022We report on coherent transmission of beyond 100 GBd signaling based on plasmonic technology. Using dual-drive plasmonic-organic-hybrid I/Q modulator on silicon photonics platform, we demonstrate the successful transmission of 160-GBaud QPSK and 140-GBaud 16QAM modulations.Conference Paper -
Experimental Evaluation of PAM and Polybinary Modulation for Intra-DCI Optical Lanes with up to 300 Gbit/s Net Bitrates
(2022)OSA Technical Digest ~ Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) 2022We experimentally test PAM and polybinary modulation in a wide range of symbol rates, as potential candidates to realize next-generation optical lanes. 306-Gbit/s bitrate is demonstrated with 140-GBd PAM-6 signal at sensitivity −17.9-dBm with EDFA-preamplifier.Conference Paper -
Maximum Information Fusion of Passive and Active Radars for Air Surveillance
(2022)2022 IEEE Radar Conference (RadarConf22)Modern passive radar systems seem promising as cost-effective gap fillers of active radar coverage and also as covert early warning sensors. Integration of passive systems into already operational active radar networks is therefore of great interest to military and civilian air surveillance. We here propose a maximum information fusion approach specifically for solving this issue demonstrating a data association, data fusion and tracking ...Conference Paper -
Plasmonics in Future Radio Communications: Potential and Challenges
(2022)2022 3rd URSI Atlantic and Asia Pacific Radio Science Meeting (AT-AP-RASC)Plasmonics is increasingly emerging as an alternative to photonics. It has the potential to revolutionize the field of communications and radio science as it gives the user access to devices with highest bandwidths, on a most compact footprint and at lowest power consumption. And while the potentials are many, the technology also has its challenges. So, for instance, plasmonic fabrication requires a technology that can handle features ...Conference Paper -
216 GBd Plasmonic Ferroelectric Modulator Monolithically Integrated on Silicon Nitride
(2022)OSA Technical Digest ~ European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) 2022We demonstrate a 216 GBd plasmonic ferroelectric modulator monolithically integrated with a foundry-produced silicon nitride platform. The combination of low-loss waveguiding, nanoscale plasmonics, and strong Pockels coefficients in barium titanate offers a platform for next-generation optical interconnect systems.Conference Paper -
Plasmonic 100-GHz Electro-Optic Modulators for Cryogenic Applications
(2022)OSA Technical Digest ~ European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) 2022We demonstrate an energy-efficient, 100-GHz plasmonic modulator operating at 4 K for beyond 128 GBd data modulation with ultra-low driving voltage of 0.1 V. High-speed components at cryogenic temperature are essential building blocks for scalable next-generation quantum computing systems.Conference Paper -

(2022)OSA Technical Digest ~ European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) 2022A novel vertical incidence metamaterial enhanced graphene photodetector featuring a 200 nm spectral window and a setup limited bandwidth of 500 GHz is demonstrated. The photodetector has been tested for data transmission in an all plasmonic EOE-link offering unprecedented 250 GHz bandwidth.Conference Paper -
Is There an Ideal Plasmonic Modulator Configuration?
(2022)OSA Technical Digest ~ European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) 2022Resonant and non-resonant modulator configurations are compared for operation with the lowest drive voltage. The ring-assisted Mach-Zehnder modulator is shown to offer a steep slope in the transfer function while delivering an open eye diagram. This enables 220GBd 2PAM plasmonic modulation with record low 0.5Vp.Conference Paper
