When FPGAs Meet Regionless Explicit MPC: An Implementation of Long-horizon Linear MPC for Power Electronic Systems
(2020)IECON 2020 The 46th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics SocietyThis paper presents a novel real-time implementation of linear model predictive control (MPC) schemes based on region-less explicit MPC (RL-EMPC). RL-EMPC is a recently proposed explicit MPC solution for achieving a low memory footprint compared to other explicit MPC methods. Thus RL-EMPC can effectively handle systems with high sampling rates even for large-size MPC problems, i.e. systems with many states and/or constraints. An architecture ...Conference Paper -
Optimal Design of a Transformer-based Solid-State Pulse Modulator with a Damping Network for Ultra-Fast Rise Times
(2021)2021 23rd European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications (EPE'21 ECCE Europe)This paper presents an optimization procedure for a transformer-based solid-state pulse modulator with an additional damping network at the load. The design of the pulse transformer and the damping network are combined in the procedure, so that pulses with pulse lengths in the μs-range with a fast rise time and a compact transformer volume can be achieved.Conference Paper -
Analytical Triple-2D Leakage Inductance Model of Cone Winding Matrix Transformers
(2021)2021 23rd European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications (EPE'21 ECCE Europe)The transformer leakage inductance is one of the limiting factors for pulse shape quality in high voltage pulsed power (HVPP) applications such as cancer treatment, particle accelerators, and free electron lasers. Cone winding matrix (CWM) transformers are commonly used in HVPP applications as they offer low leakage inductance, low parasitic capacitance, high power density, and high insulation distance. This paper proposes an analytical ...Conference Paper -
Modelling and Design Optimisation of a High Bandwidth and High Precision Optical Current Sensor Based on the Faraday Effect
(2021)2021 23rd European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications (EPE'21 ECCE Europe)A magneto-optical current measurement system based on the Faraday effect is evaluated for measuring fast pulse currents in high power applications. The current measurement system is based on the interaction of the magnetic field, generated by the current, and a beam of light propagating through magneto-optical material which is in close proximity to the current conductor. A high local magnetic field per ampère current inside the optical ...Conference Paper -
Overvoltages and Overcurrents in HV/MV Hybrid Transformers due to Grid Faults
(2021)2021 23rd European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications (EPE'21 ECCE Europe)Power electronic converters in grid applications as for example hybrid transformers are vulnerable to grid faults, so that a protection system is required. This paper identifies critical overcurrents and overvoltages due to grid faults and presents grid models to calculate the overcurrents and a high frequency transformer model to calculate the overvoltages, in order to derive requirements/specifications for designing protection systems.Conference Paper -
Fast and Accurate Electric Field Model for Optimizing the Insulation Design of Magnetic Devices
(2021)2021 IEEE Design Methodologies Conference (DMC)A bottleneck in optimization procedures of magnetic components is the calculation of the electric field strength (e.g. for an optimized insulation design) since this is based either on a slow numerical field simulation or on rough approximations. Hence, a fast and accurate method for the electric field calculation in the winding window is crucial for a fast optimization process. This paper presents a novel electric field calculation method ...Conference Paper -
Verification and Application of an Analytical Switching Loss Model for a SiC MOSFET and Schottky Diode Half-Bridge
(2022)2022 International Power Electronics Conference (IPEC-Himeji 2022- ECCE Asia)This paper investigates the accuracy of a comprehensive analytical switching loss model (benchmark model) for a SiC MOSFET and Schottky diode half-bridge over a wide operating range using devices from different manufacturers. The model on average shows an error of 8.63% for turn-on losses and 7.68% for turn-off losses. In addition, the benchmark model is applied to analyze the possible accuracy improvement by using measured device ...Conference Paper -

(2021)2021 23rd European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications (EPE'21 ECCE Europe)An accurate analytical switching loss model for a SiC MOSFET and Schottky diode half-bridge for a wide operating range is proposed in this paper, which is based on nonlinear differential circuit equations including parasitics. In the model, nonlinear device characteristics are used, including the dynamic gate-rain capacitance and the transfer characteristics measured under real switching conditions. With the proposed model, the accuracy ...Conference Paper -
Cooling limits of passively cooled integrated motor drives
(2021)2021 23rd European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications (EPE'21 ECCE Europe)In this paper, the achievable cooling limits of passively cooled integrated motor drives are investigated. For the concept of a drive-integrated end cap with cooling fins a thermal model is derived and used to calculate the cooling system performance index, resulting in a range of CSPI = 0.67..1.8WK-1 L-1 which is primarily suitable for high-torque, low-speed motors.Conference Paper -
Dynamic Operation of Buck-Boost DC-DC Converters over Wide Operating Ranges with Switching Based Model Predictive Control (MPC)
(2021)2021 23rd European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications (EPE'21 ECCE Europe)In this paper, a novel model predictive control (MPC) scheme is proposed for buck-boost converters for achieving a high control bandwidth over wide operating ranges. There, the duty cycles of the four possible switching states are considered as control inputs, such that an exact state propagation can be accurately predicted in a large-signal linear model. Unlike conventional methods, which suffer from poor dynamic control performance when ...Conference Paper
